Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips

Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips was born in Jamaica, but grew up in Canada, and there he embraced Islam in 1972.

And ever since, stopped playing music and gave up art, devoted his time to the study of Islam. He began the study of Arabic and soon learned to recite the Qur'an.

Bilal made a lot of effort to gather as much information about Islam as he can from different directions which resulted in his confusion. In order to resolve this conflict of information he headed to the East, to the actual source of Islam, and immersed himself in Arabic and Islamic studies.

He finished a diploma in Arabic and a B.A. from the College of Islamic Disciplines (Usool ad-Deen) at the Islamic University of Madinah in 1979. In 1985 he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology at the University of Riyadh, College of Education. In the department of Islamic Studies at the University of Wales, he completed a Ph.D. in Islamic Theology in 1994.

Dr. Bilal Philips taught Islamic Education and Arabic in private schools in Riyadh for over ten years and for three years he gave lectures to M.Ed. students in the Islamic Studies department of Shariff Kabunsuan Islamic University in Cotobato City, Mindanao, Philippines.

From the point of view of learning all aspects of Islam, Bilal had come to the right place. "In terms of Islamic knowledge, the education in Madinah University is more extensive than at any university in the West", he says. "In the west the method of education emphasises understanding, research and interpretation, whereas in the East emphasis is placed on memorization and verbatim quotation."

Since 1994 he has established the Islamic Information Center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (now known as Discover Islam) and the Foreign Literature Department of Dar al Fatah Islamic Press in Sharjah, UAE. Afterwards he became a lecturer of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the American University in Dubai and Ajman University in Ajman, UAE.

"About 15 to 20 percent of my students graduate seriously committed to Islam. They go back to Pakistan, England or the States and do serious work for Islam." Some of the boys he has taught were confirmed atheists, although from Muslim homes. With Bilal's these boys later became very active Muslims. "This makes all the headaches and trials of teaching worth it", he says.

Bilal has translated three books on Shiism from Arabic to English because he feels that there are not enough books on the subject in English from a Sunni point of view.

Among his published works are translations of "Ibn Taymiyyah's Essay on the Jinn", "The Devil's Deception" and Arabic Calligraphy in Manuscripts.

Bilal co-authored "Polygamy in Islam", and wrote "Evolution of Islamic Law", "Through Repentance", "Islamic Studies", "Hajj and Umrah According to Qur'an & Sunnah", "Islamic Rules on Menstruation", "Arabic Reading & Writing Made Easy", "Arabic Grammar Made Easy" and "The Purpose of Creation".

He also translated "Ibn Taymiyyah's Essay on the Jinn", and Arabic Calligraphy in Manuscripts.

Moreover, he co-authored "Polygamy in Islam" and wrote "The Qur'an's Numerical Miracle - Hoax and Heresy", "Evolution of Fiqh", "Islamic law and The Madh-habs", "Tafsir Surrah al-Hujuraat", "The Ansar Cult", "The Fundamentals of Tawhid", "Hajj and 'Umrah According to Qur'an and Sunnah", "Islamic Studies (Book:1)", and "Salvation Through Repentance".

Bilal's target is still to change society for the better but the revolution must come through spreading the true picture of Islam and directing people to the right way to practice Islam, and to this end he has devoted his life.
